The line was extended from Nerima to Shinjuku on December 19, 1997, and later to from Shinjuku to Kokuritsu-Kyōgijō on April 20, 2000. With this extension, Shintaro Ishihara, the governor of Tokyo, named the line Toei Ōedo Line, where Ōedo literally means “Great Edo”, a reference to Tokyo’s former name.

The Oedo Line Shinjuku Station is located underground near the southwest corner of JR Shinjuku Station and the Toei Shinjuku Line Shinjuku Station. Toei Oedo Line Shinjuku-Nishiguchi Station. Oedo Line runs 40.7km through 38 stations from Tochomae Station over a loop portion that circles around Tokyo and a radiating portion that runs to Hikarigaoka. It connects the Yamanote area and downtown, and at terminals such as Shinjuku and Roppongi, you can change trains for various other routes. It is an extremely convenient line.

The Toei Oedo Line is a long subway forming a loop through central Tokyo. Trains do not travel in a perfect circle, however, and a transfer is required at Tochomae, the station under Tokyo’s city hall, to keep traveling the loop. The line also has a “tail” that extends westward from central Tokyo to Hikarigaoka Station in Nerima Ward.
